In summer 2013, the Young Photographers Alliance (YPA) mentoring program paired 76 college-age photo students with 33 professional photography mentors in 19 teams throughout the United States, Canada, Scotland, India and United Kingdom. From June through August, teams met regularly to discuss the common theme “Escape” and review work from individual mentee projects.

The resulting images and project statements will debut in an exhibition at New York’s Calumet Gallery, 22 W. 22nd Street, 2nd floor, on Wednesday, January 15, with an opening reception from 5 to 9 pm. Winners of three “best of” category awards – best overall mentee, best single image and best team – will be announced at the reception. A suggested donation of $20, to support next year’s programming, can be made at the door or in advance.

Creative energy and a dose of friendly competition fueled a collaborative approach within each team, allowing both mentees and mentors to mutually benefit from the experience. Many of the mentees and mentors will be present at the reception, so come connect with this dynamic community while enjoying hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine.
