Founded in 1947 by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, George Rodger and David Seymour, the Magnum Photos agency is one of the most prestigious in the world. To be nominated to join the agency is to become legendary.

After its Annual General meeting this year, which took place this past June, Magnum Photos announced that it had nominated five photographers. They are:

Sim Chi Yin (Singapore)

Gregory Halpern (USA)

Rafal Milach (Poland)

Lua Ribeira (Spain)

Lindokuhle Sobekwa (South Africa)

Two previous nominees, Sohrab Hura and Lorenzo Meloni, we advanced to Associate status.

The process of becoming a full member of Magnum Photos takes a minimum of four years. First, photographers submit a portfolio. If it is accepted, they become a nominee to the agency, with no binding commitments on either side. After two years, nominees are invited to submit an updated portfolio to be elevated to Associates, which binds them to the agency, but also allows them to enjoy all the facilities of its offices and worldwide representation.

Traditionally, Magnum Photos only selected one or two nominees a year, but that began to change in 2015, when the agency accepted six Nominees.
